At long last! The first pics of the Mrs Lovett (from Sweeney Todd) costume I've been working on. Photos of the client wearing it to follow soon :D Costume was picked up last night, they left around 1:00 am haha oh good time :)

So couple of weeks work on this one, off and on. Skirt started out as ivory calico! Far too many hours spent stenciling; dying; and breaking down... about 3 days to get the color how I wanted it (ish). But done now yay and hurrar! It was all an amazing learning curve, great fun :D

Blouse is some stretch (like tee shirting) broderie anglai covered in fine mesh (some of which had little gold dots all over it, somehow worked a treat despite my misgivings). The black and gold lace around the collar I ended up building up out of layers of cheap black lacy and some nasty gold foil like stuff. I ended up treating the blouse essentially like a tee and just overlocked it together, lazy I know, but adequate for what is essentially fancy dress ';P

Underbust corset constructed from black calico (I LOVE calico, so cheap, so stable!) faced with raw silk or something of the sort, just some stuff I had in my stores. I boned it with some off cut plastic from some cutlery trays, basically just to keep the cost down.

I try to cut costs wherever I can since I think it's important to produce a product that is suitable and justifiable for it's purpose. If it's for fancy dress (or stage) make it as cheaply as possible, if it's for film then pull out all stops (especially for principle cast of course).

As you might be able to see, I have yet to master cutting back entirely... far too much time spent on this one ;D

Anyway it's been a lot of fun and I've leant heaps in the process. Any and all comments welcomed and as always if you've got any questions I'm more than happy to answer them as best I can :D

Yay thanks so much, glad you like it :D
Unfortunately at present I'm only doing commissions for people in the same country (well, same city really, it's just a logistics thing haha) But anyway, I have yet to work out what I should really charge for something like this, since in this instance it was for a friend.

But I suppose I could probably get around NZ$400 (if not more) for a costume with this amount of work in it should I sell it on the open market. I probably got a little carried away with it and spent too much time lol but I was having fun and learning lots, so it's all good.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't answer you question exactly :(

But thanks again for your comment, I was aiming to be as accurate as possible :D

ahh ok well its good that you spend that much time, people pay for quality and accuracy. i mean i would pay shit load of money for a 100% accurate costume. NZ? whats NZ? so $400 US dollars right?

thanks for answering my question

did you create the patterns for the dress yourself or did you buy and then modify a pattern?
i cant find any patterns online that match exactly mrs lovett's dress

Yeah thats true, it's just sometimes it's hard to judge how much quality and accuracy is overkill ;D

Ah no sorry, NZ = New Zealand, New Zealand Dollars. We're the little country 'below' Australia :p

Yeah I made the patterns myself, the dress is actually quite simple, it's pretty much an 'A line' a guess, sits on the natural waistline (not the hip) and doesn't have much flair. The fullness at the back is actually just created by the frills, I made them about 1/2 the width of the back wider and just gathered them by zig-zagging over some wire/cord stuff and then just sewing them on before doing the side seems.

Actually I think it's not so much a dress/skirt pattern as a petticoat pattern. The whole movie seems to do that, borrow things from various places, going for an overall look and feel of the characters as apposed to strict historical accuracy, though I haven't researched it all that in depth.

:iconsweeneytodd2010:
oh yea that last part you said is correct, Colleen said she wanted to create a unique world that is partially accurate, but not too "precious" to a particular period. so she creates a unique look to the movie while still maintaining somewhat historical accuracy
man she did an amazing job with the costumes in the movie, the detail and material she used was really well done

and o...how much is that in US currency?

and oh....well better to have overly accurate 100% than to be so far off. im an incredibly picky person when it comes to accuracy, so id pay for whatever it takes to get it to look PERFECT

i mean if i knew how to make costumes, i would add on the golden beads, leaf shaped beads, by hand like they did in the movie to get a more authentic look to things.
and thats awesome. i wouldnt be able to make patterns myself, and my step mother cant either, so accuracy gets somewhat compromised that way since i would have to find a pattern close to it. ugh its annoying
could you make another one and sell it on ebay?!??!!?

hmmm well at present it's about $303 US Dollars I think.

Well yes, I personally like to be accurate as possible, but you have to remember that when I'm making something for a client I have to work to a suitable level of accuracy, time is money ;D So the amount of work you put in varies between jobs/clients. But personally yeah I'm with you on the accuracy :)

Yeah, I had difficulty finding what I wanted for the gold beads or whatever they are, and in the end just went without, having not found anything satisfactory in time, I may get the client to bring it back and I'll add some at some point, we'll see.

Yeah I guess I could make another one and sell it on ebay, but I'd most likely be a while before I can be bothered ';p

I may upload some patterns at some point though :D I just need to find a good way of doing it, since I can only scan A4 lol But really, the skirt is very simple, it just looks fancy because of all the frills. It's the corset and blouse which are a little more difficult to get right.

:iconsweeneytodd2010:
oh. ok well thats ok. and if you do that! please send me a message (for the patterns) i can give them to my step mother to make a costume for me.xD
and the gold beads were leaf shaped and little gold balls, along with flat gold beads along the neckline....i saw some at Michael's once and a lot at fabric stores

if you made a dress for me, i would pay w.e is needed to get utmost accuracy and quality. i have high standards for costumes, i have a ST costume now, but its not near accurate enough for me....soooo...i need to re work it again...ugh

I feel bad now cause here I am asking you all these questions and I had yet to fav one of these pics of your amazing dress! That ends now! Insta fav!

Steps to enlightenment brighten the way; but the steps are steep. Take them one at a time.
:icontobias-lockhart:
Yeah sure thing, I'll have to look into some ways of doing the patterns, but yes certainly I will flick you a message if I upload anything :)

Yeah there probably were all kinds of loose beads and things at the shops I went to, but I was trying to avoid sewing them on individually, I hoped to get flat gold beads or some kind of metal 'domes' on a strand, if that makes sense kinda like -O-O-O-O. But no luck :p

To be honest I have no immediate plans to do overseas commissions (as I said before) but maybe in the future, If I did I'd probably do to the nearest standard size (rather than made to measure). The exchange rate is generally in your favor however ;D
